US 201 US 202

U.S. Route 201 Alternate, signed as U.S. Route 201A, is a 26.2-mile (42.2 km) long alternate route of U.S. Route 201. The route, itself a former alignment of its parent, connects to US-201 in the towns of Skowhegan and Solon, running a loop to the west of its parent. The entire route closely parallels the nearby Kennebec River.

Today, US-201A is completely overlaid by other routes; it runs concurrently with State Route 8 for most of its length, along with shorter concurrencies with U.S. Route 2, State Route 43, State Route 148, and State Route 16.

Route description

US-201A begins in Skowhegan just south of the Kennebec River, at an intersection with US-2, US-201, and Route 104. At this four way intersection, US-2 East and US-201 North cross the river together to the north, US-201 South leaves to the east, Route 104 begins to the south, and US-201A North begins to the west, co-signed with US-2 West.

US-2 and US-201A proceed southwest along the southern bank of the river on the way to the town of Norridgewock. Upon reaching town, the highway intersects with Routes 8 and 139. Route 139 has its western terminus at this intersection, while Route 8 northbound joins the concurrency. Just to the west, US-2 splits off to the southwest, while US-201A goes to the northwest with Route 8 in tow (US-201A and Route 8 remain co-signed for the remainder of their length).

The two routes continue along the riverbank, turning north into the town of Madison and intersecting with Routes 43 and 148. At this point, US-201A and Route 8 turn west, joining the converging routes to cross the river as a four-route concurrency. On the west side of the bridge lies the town of Anson, where US-201A and Route 8 split to the north off Routes 43 and 148, which proceed west concurrently. The two routes head north along the west bank of the river into the village of North Anson, intersecting the eastern end of State Route 234 before meeting Route 16 just to the north.

Route 16 joins US-201 and Route 8, proceeding north along the river out of town, and eventually passing into Solon. Nearing the riverbank once more, Route 16 splits to continue north along the river, while US-201 and Route 8 turn northeast to cross the river. Shortly thereafter, the road meets back up with US-201. Both US-201 and Route 8 terminate at this intersection.

Major intersections

The entire route is in Somerset County.
